Costco Anaylsis Essay Example For Students
Costco Anaylsis Essay 1. Do you think Jim Sinegal is an effective CEO? What grades would you give him in leading the process of crafting and executing Costcoââ¬â¢s strategy? What support can you offer for these grades? Refer to Figure 2. 1 in Chapter 2 in developing your answers. I believe that Jim Sinegal is a very effective CEO. His company was the first U. S. company to ever reach 1 billion in sales in less than six years. He exhibited leadership skills and engaged with team members at other Costco Stores. He believed in calling one another on a first name basis and had an informal dress clothes to avoid the typical boss attire. Sinegal did things that most bosses donââ¬â¢t do, and these things allowed him to be an effective leader. I would give Sinegal an ââ¬Å"Aââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ in strategy. Instead of following the competition, he choose to make prices lower. Most competitors constantly think of ways to increase product prices, but Costco feels that lower prices drive more customers through the door. Although they had the opportunity to make more profit off of higher price margins, Costco kept smaller margins, to keep their prices low. Costco also provided a limited selection of fast selling product, which helped lower cost and also allow them to be more efficient. Costcoââ¬â¢s treasure hunt merchandising instilled a sense of urgency in customers because there was no assurance that the product would be available for long. Allocating ? of treasure hunt items allowed for increased the likelihood that each customer would purchase one of these items. Because Costcoââ¬â¢s centers a lot of their business in remaining low cost, they do not spend too much money in advertising. Costco uses the word of mouth advertising to lure more customers in, which is another approach to keep cost low. Sinegal manages his strategies by ensuring that excellent employees are brought upon his team. He attracts quality employees by ensuring that they are paid well and have a multitude of benefits. After they are brought onboard they are treated respectfully by policies, procedures and various training. Costco also has an open door policy, which ultimately makes employees feel comfortable to voice any concerns, or questions they may have. In turn, this will make feel them happy while in the work place, thus leading to more productivity. Overall Sinegal sets good performance targets, crafts and executes various strategies, and makes corrective adjustments that reflect a positive performance. . How well is Costco performing from a strategic perspective? Does Costco enjoy a competitive advantage over Samââ¬â¢s Club? Over BJââ¬â¢s Wholesale? If so, what is the nature of its competitive advantage? Does Costco have a winning strategy? Why or why not? From a strategic perspective Costco is performing efficiently. They are using a low cost, high quality product to achieve high sale s. They spend very little money on anything extra because they want their customers to enjoy low cost items. To intend to grow sales and profits they by building an even larger and fiercely larger database. This will allow Costco to expand offerings of private label products so that customers have a place to shop for low practical business and household supplies. Yes Costco does have a competitive over Sams Club. They offer lower price items, upscale treasure items, member privileges, American Express payment, and overall customer service appeal. Yes Costco does have a competitive advantage over BJââ¬â¢s Wholesale as well. They offer prescription filling services as well as all the stuff mentioned above. I believe that Costco has a winning strategy. Time and time again successful companies are taking a low cost, high quality strategy to out beat their competitors. Costco provides customers with a one-stop shopping experience while setting prices significantly lower than their competitors, and getting extra revenue by placing products in a prime location. Costco has taken a large portion of the market share and will continue to do so in the future, as long as they continue their current strategy. 3. What recommendations would you make to Jim Sinegal regarding the actions that Costco management needs to take to sustain the companyââ¬â¢s growth and improve its financial performance? .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 , .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .postImageUrl , .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 , .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:hover , .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:visited , .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:active { border:0!important; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:active , .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7 .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u65289621fd9e6e89d71500be92788fa7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Inherit The Wind (931 words) EssayIn order to sustain the companyââ¬â¢s growth and improve its financial performance Costco needs to open more locations in business booming areas. By adding more locations, Costco stores would continue to see an increase in their total revenue. In addition, they should consider trimming back on their lucrative fringe benefit packages. Costco currently offers its employees the following benefits: â⬠¢Health and dental packages â⬠¢Convenient store pickup â⬠¢401K Plan â⬠¢Dependent care reimbursement â⬠¢Long term disability program â⬠¢Short term disability program â⬠¢Life insurance Stock purchase plan â⬠¢Health care reimbursement plan â⬠¢Long term insurance plan â⬠¢Counseling Services With Costco offering high compensation and bi-annual bonuses, I think that they should cut back on some of the benefits that they offer. This alone would allow them to still keep their employees happy, but also cut some cost. Lastly, I think Costco should add additional merchandising techniques to entice customers to purchase additional big ticket items. Merchandising should be based on placing items in various locations, or more appealing signage.

Why Some Cells Commit Suicide
Why Some Cells Commit Suicide Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a naturally occurring process in the body. It involves a controlled sequence of steps in which cells signal self-termination, in other words, your cells commit suicide.à Apoptosis is a way for theà body to keep checks and balances on the naturalà cell divisionà process of mitosisà or continued cell growth and regeneration. Why Cells Undergo Apoptosis There are several instances in which cells may need to self-destruct. In some situations, cells may need to be removed to ensure proper development. For example, as our brains develop, the body creates millions of more cells than it needs; the ones that do not form synaptic connections can undergo apoptosis so that the remaining cells can function well. Another example is the natural process of menstruation that involves the breakdown and removal of tissue from the uterus. Programmed cell death is necessary to start the process of menstruation. Cells may also become damaged or undergo some type of infection. One way to remove these cells without causing harm to other cells is for your body to initiate apoptosis.à Cells may recognize virusesà and gene mutations and can induce death to prevent the damage from spreading. What Happens During Apoptosis? Apoptosis is a complex process. During apoptosis, a cell triggers a process from within that will allow it to commit suicide. If a cell experiences some type of significant stress, such as DNA damage, then signals are released which cause mitochondria to release apoptosis-inducing proteins. As a result, the cell undergoes a reduction in size as its cellular components and organelles break down and condense. Bubble-shaped balls called blebs appear on the surface of the cell membrane. Once the cell shrinks, it breaks down into smaller fragments called apoptotic bodies and sends out distress signals to the body. These fragments are enclosed in membranes so as not to harm nearby cells. The distress signal is answered by vacuum cleaners known as macrophages. The macrophages clean away the shrunken cells, leaving no trace, so these cells have no chance to cause cellular damage or an inflammatory reaction. Apoptosis can also be triggered externally by chemical substances that bind to specific receptors on the cell surface. This is how white blood cells combat infection and activate apoptosis in infected cells. Apoptosis and Cancer Some types of cancers persist as a result of a cells inability to trigger apoptosis. Tumor viruses change cells by integrating their genetic material with the host cells DNA. Cancer cells are usually a permanent insertion in the genetic material. These virusesà can sometimes initiate the production of proteins that stop apoptosis from occurring. An example of this is seen with papilloma viruses, which have been linked with cervical cancer. Cancer cells that do not develop from viral infection can also produce substances that inhibit apoptosis and promote uncontrolled growth. Radiation and chemical therapies are used as a mode of therapy to induce apoptosis in some types of cancers.

Cystocele, Rectocele, and Vaginal Prolapse Essay
Cystocele, Rectocele, and Vaginal Prolapse - Essay Example Vaginal prolapse on the other hand resembles a hernia for there is protrusion of part of the abdominal or pelvic contents through an aperture in the supporting structures. Protrusion takes place between the two levatores ani and, in more severe cases, through the orifice of the vagina when vaginal prolapse occurs (Hamilton-Fairley, D., 2004). Signs and Symptoms: The commonest complaints are feeling of fullness of the vagina, a lump coming down, a dragging sensation or bearing down in the back or lower abdomen, vaginal discharge due to congestion of the cervix, an ulcer of the ectocervix or cervical ectropion, and a bloodstained discharge may occur if there is ulceration. Difficulty with coitus may be experienced if the cervix protrudes or is greatly elongated. Urinary symptoms include frequency of micturition. This is common and is often daytime only. Nocturnal frequency may be present if there is added cystitis. Some patients may have urgency of micturition due to weakness of the bladder sphincter mechanism and urge incontinence may occur in some cases. There may be difficulty in emptying the bladder completely and the woman may find she has to push the prolapse up with a finger to complete the act of micturition. Complete retention of urine may follow urethral overstretch. This may be associated with stress incontinenc e. Many women with prolapse complain of constipation, and this may be due to difficulty in emptying the rectum completely because it bulges into the vagina. Others notice discomfort on sitting on a firm surface; the vaginal wall over the rectocoele can bulge down between the labia. With age, the labia become atrophic and less protective and the prolapsed vagina is exposed to trauma when sitting on hard surfaces (Hamilton-Fairley, D., 2004). A cystourethrocoele is usually obvious and the distance from the introitus to the bulge can be measured using a special ruler. The woman is asked to cough and any leakage of urine and/or descent of the cervix is noted. As the speculum is withdrawn any posterior vaginal wall prolapse can be noted. Where there is a complaint of stress incontinence, examination is best made with some urine in the bladder; the urethra and bladder neck may then be supported with two fingers to demonstrate that this maneuver controls the incontinence (Hamilton-Fairley, D., 2004). Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures: Stress incontinence must be distinguished from other causes of incontinence of urine such as urge incontinence and incontinence due to neurological disease. General examination should include fitness for surgery. Abdominal examination should be performed to exclude an intra-abdominal mass. Manual pelvic examination or ultrasound should exclude a pelvic mass and delineate the size of the uterus and ovaries if present. If prolapse is not evident, even with a Valsalva manoeuvre, the patient should be examined in the upright position. It is important to reproduce the symptoms and signs with which the patient presents. If a woman has significant urinary symptoms, urodynamics may help define the cause of the symptoms, which will enable the gynaecologist to give some prognosis for treatment. Hence, if urodynamics

Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Religion - Essay Example This comprehensive definition is very good because it covers the complex social dimension that this word implies. In the movie Grand Canyon, for example, certain characters appear who intervene to avert disaster. It is possible to see those characters as angels, using a Judaeo Christian religious paradigm, or as reincarnated ancestors using an animist paradigm, as elements of pure chance using an atheistic paradigm, or just as tools to move the plot along using a film studies paradigm. Each alternative reveals a different aspect of these characters. The concept of a paradigm shift refers to what happens when people switch from one paradigm to another. An example of a major paradigm shift in history is, for example, when sailors first sailed round the world and discovered that the earth is not flat, and that you do not fall off the edge if you sail too far in one direction. In this case new evidence was found that contradicted the old world view that people held. Sometimes, however, t he evidence is not very clear, or people are very attached to their old paradigms, and in these situations multiple paradigms can coexist all at the same time.

Defiance and Resistance Essay Example for Free
Defiance and Resistance Essay In both works The Crucible and The Bride Price by Arthur Miller and Buchi Emecheta, superstition and hysteria play key roles in destroying the morale of the Puritan and African communities. The setting in which both take place in between pre and post modernization effect the odd behavior demonstrated. In both texts, behavior different from that which is customary and accepted is interpreted as supernatural witchcraft. The fear of the unknown as well as jealousy fashions agitation, which in turn provokes individuals to turn on one another going against values and beliefs. In the play-write The crucible, Miller demonstrates the theme of the story which was rising over adversity, and standing for the truth even to death. Miller is displaying his interpretation of rise over adversity through John Proctor. John, in the beginning, wanted to keep distant from the trials. He did not want to associate or disregard his personal values by being part of the trials. When Elizabeth was arrested, he was forced to become part of it. He went to court first to set his wife free but after watching the proceedings, he saw that the evil was not only being done to his own wife but many others like his wife. As a result, he worked even harder to free the other innocent people, getting himself arrested. Despite this drawback, he did not give up. He had the chance to free himself if he testified against the others but he realized that this would be wrong, and even though he wanted to free himself, he would not if it meant bringing trouble upon others. He cleansed himself at the trial, standing for what he knew was right and died a righteous person. Though he stayed away from church, he became more pure than the common Puritans, dying as a martyr like the original apostles. He learned what truth meant through his suffering. In the novel, The Bride Price, Emecheta displays defiance and resistance through her protagonist, Aku-nna. In the Ibuza culture, it is not proper to marry or even associate ones self with an oseu. As the story builds to a climax, so does Aku-nnas courage build. Her courage, in turn, builds her defiance. After Aku-nnas menstruation has become public knowledge, she refuses to eat the chicken that has been slaughtered in her honor. At this point in the story, Aku-nna registers what very well might have been her first defiant thought. She was beginning to feel that it was unjust that she was not to be allowed a say in her own life, and she was beginning to hate her mother for being so passive about it all. As she stands in front of Okoboshi, the young man who has kidnapped her as a potential bride, Aku-nna loudly and forcefully speaks out in an attempt to save herself. It is out of fear of not only being raped but also of being deprived of ever seeing Chike again that she finds her voice and creates a story so vile that Okoboshi leaves her alone. The vile story that she creates is a lie, but the lie represents the epitome of her defiance. She tells Okoboshi that she is not a virgin; and, furthermore, she lost her virginity to a descendant of a slave. In so doing, Aku-nna risks everything, possibly even her life. Her uncle would surely kill her on sight but if she was forced to live with these people for long, she would soon die, for that was the intention behind all the taboos and customs. Anyone who contravened them was better dead and when you were dead, people would ask: Did we not say so? Nobody goes against the laws of the land and survives. Although Aku-nna has made her own choice to run away from her arranged marriage and marry Chike against her parents wishes, she cannot let go of the myth that plagues her: If a girl wishes to live long and see her childrens children, she must accept the husband chosen for her by her people if the bride price was not paid, she would never survive the birth of her first child (168). Though Chikes father offered to pay Aku-nnas bride price, her uncle simply refused to accept it, and therefore cursed her to die. In the end of the story, Aku-nna dies in childbirth, and her legend is used to further reinforce the threat of grim results for women who make their own choices. These stories remind its readers of an ugly blemish on human history. It reminds one that man is not perfect, and that we can make mistakes. However, even with these mistakes, we can cleanse ourselves and purify ourselves by making what is wrong right. As in The Bride Price where Aku-nna stands for what she believes in and what she loves and John Proctor standing for what he valued, both were defiant against their setting or community. The sufferings become to the sufferer like a crucible, and one must pay the price be it a bride price or the price of life.
